The following are the primary complications that can result from tattooing:
- Infection. Unsterile tattooing equipment and needles can transmit infectious diseases, such as hepatitis and skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus ("staph") bacteria. Tattoos received at facilities not regulated by your state or at facilities that use unsterile equipment (or re-use ink) may prevent you from being accepted as a blood or plasma donor for twelve months.
- Removal problems. Despite advances in laser technology, removing a tattoo is a painstaking process, usually involving several treatments and considerable expense. Complete removal without scarring may be impossible.
- Allergic reactions. Although FDA has received reports of numerous adverse ractions associated with certain shades of ink in permanent makeup, marketed by a particular manufacturer, reports of allergic reactions to tattoo pigments have been rare. However, when they happen they may be particularly troublesome because the pigments can be hard to remove. Occasionally, people may develop an allergic reaction to tattoos they have had for years.
- Granulomas. These are nodules that may form around material that the body perceives as foreign, such as particles of tattoo pigment.
- Keloid formation. If you are prone to developing keloids—scars that grow beyond normal boundaries—you are at risk of keloid formation from a tattoo. Keloids may form any time you injure or traumatize your skin. Micropigmentation: State of the Art, a book written by Charles Zwerling, M.D., Annette Walker, R.N., and Norman Goldstein, M.D., states that keloids occur more frequently as a consequence of tattoo removal." - Galegroup.com
I personally like the ideas of tattoos, but if I ever get one, I wanna make sure to do my homework.
Do you know what you want?
OK, you can legally and parentally get a tattoo, the next step is finding something with meaning. Sure, the tattoo flash that you see on the walls at your local tattoo parlor may be cool but generic art won't be unique to you. Take a flash image that you like and modify it to speak to your personality. Choose a tattoo with meaning for you and you can't go wrong.
Do you know the risks?
There are risks associated with tattooing beyond the obvious short term pain. Unsanitary tattoo parlors do exists and they can be deadly. There are always risks of allergic reactions and disease transmission when you have a tattoo done. You can reduce the risk by knowing about health risks and what tattoo parlors should be doing to keep you safe before getting inked.
Have you found a good artist?
The difference between a nice tattoo and an amazing tattoo all comes down to the artist. A good artist can make your tattoo dreams a reality but a bad artist can turn your tattoo experience into a nightmare. Be picky, this tattoo will be with you for life and longer.
Are you ready to take care of the tattoo?
Tattoos require aftercare in order to avoid infection. Are you ready to look after your tattoo? Do you know what it means to care for a tattoo while it is healing? Everything you need to know about helping your new tattoo heal.
Make sure you know you're going to a safe parlor. Because the only one who'll regret it is you.
Now i want a tattoo.
ReplyDeleteVery informative. It seems like much of the "dangerous" aspect has been addresses by improved sterilization methods. I think to get a tattoo in the past you needed to be quite a risk taker and a bit of a rebel. You do a nice job of investigaing teh art aspect. I personally don't have one and probably won't get one. I like being able to donate blood. But, who know if there was something meaningful to me that I felt it needed to be a part of my body I might take the chance.

ReplyDeleteI think tats are pretty cool, but you're right, you definately have to be careful where you place them.
ReplyDeleteThis article really made me discussed and kind of nauseous. I agree with Mr. T and his statement of “It seems like much of the "dangerous" aspect has been addresses” A bit of positivity would have been nice. But overall nice job !
ReplyDeleteI am thinking about getting a tattoo in a little bit so it's nice to know about the danger sides of it. And I have a lot of piercings in my ear because i don't want visible holes on my face or anything.
ReplyDeleteSince I am going to get a tattoo after basic training, i must say that i found this post to be very informative. I am definitely going to make sure they do it safely and cleanly.
ReplyDeletetatoos are an interesting subject. They might look cool but theyre a very long term commitment.
ReplyDeleteI rather get a piercing. I am going get a belly button ring when I turn 16. Tattoos can be very cool but what happens in few years you don't want it any more. Thats why I will never get a tattoo.
ReplyDeleteI don't want a tatoo. I am glad I know the dangers of getting a tatoo.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know there were so many risks if you get a tattoo!
ReplyDeleteI like your blog alot. Im about to be getting my first tattoo soon and i agree that if you dont get it in the right spot you will mess up how you are looked at in life. Hiding your tattoo is a big deal and if you have a ridiculous one it could effect the job you could be going for in the future. && all the dangers that go along with it are very eye opening. good job!
ReplyDeleteI actually love peircings and tattoos. After i graduate the first thing I'm doing is getting snake bites, because I love them.
ReplyDeleteThat black-light tattoo is sick!! As long as its done safely, I don't see anything wrong with getting a tattoo.
ReplyDeleteI plan on getting a tattoo soon but I hadn't really thought much about placement of the tattoo, but now I am going to make sure that I put it in a smart place so it will be concealed easy if it needs to be.
ReplyDeleteIf any of you have seen me, then you know I already have Snakebites. If you're thinking about getting them Kathleen, I'll give you some care advice and tell you about the experiance if It'll help.
